B-Side turns iPhone Duo into a turntable
Open iPhone Duo like a book and B-Side puts your record collection on the top screen and a turntable flat on the bottom half: you pick a record above the fold, then drop the needle, scratch, brake and pitch it below.

[TOWN], [DATE] – Independent developer Richard Tokeley today releases B-Side - Vinyl Player, a music player built for iPhone Duo. B-Side is for vinyl lovers with a curated MP3 library: it turns the folders of MP3s people have collected into records, and plays them on a turntable they can touch.
Made for the fold
iPhone Duo's book posture is the whole idea. Held upright and half-open, the Duo's bottom half lies flat on the table like a turntable plinth, and that's where B-Side puts the deck. The top half stands up like a record shelf, and that's where your records go: the tracks of the record that's playing, each with its sleeve, and the rest of your collection a tap away. B-Side reads where the fold is from iOS and splits its screen exactly there, so nothing important ever sits in the crease.
Pick a record on the top screen and the tonearm swings across the bottom one, the needle drops, and the side plays through in order, gaplessly, like vinyl. Fold the Duo shut and B-Side carries on as a regular iPhone app on the outside screen; open it out flat on its side and the shelves move to the left with the deck on the right.
[Draft quote for Richard to approve or rewrite] “The moment you open iPhone Duo halfway, the bottom half looks exactly like a turntable plinth. B-Side was the obvious thing to build: your records stand up on the top screen, and the deck lies flat where your hand naturally goes. You drop the needle, you scratch it, you brake the platter, on a phone.” – Richard Tokeley, developer of B-Side
A turntable you can touch
- Scratch it. Put a finger on the record to hold it, nudge it or scratch it in either direction; flick it and it spins on, let go and the motor brings it back up to speed. Every 200° of turn is a second of music, like a real 33.
- Brake it. Pause runs the platter down the way a real deck does; Play spins it back up.
- Pitch it. A pitch fader moves the music up or down by 8%, with 33 and 45 on the Retro Deck.
- Hear it. Vinylize slides in as much vinyl crackle as you like, from a faint hint of surface noise to a well-loved record. It's generated live rather than looped, and slows down with the platter when you brake.
- Choose your deck. The Retro Deck is built from photographs of the developer's own DJ turntable, with working power, start/stop, 33/45, strobe dots, a target light and a cue lever. The Modern Deck is a minimal black turntable. A third, Classic, puts a spinning record over the track details.
Your collection, not a catalogue
B-Side doesn't stream or sell music. It plays MP3s people already own, from iCloud Drive or on the device: every folder of MP3s becomes a record, each folder's artwork becomes its sleeve, and B-Side remembers where you were in every record. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show the record turning, there's a play/pause control for Control Centre, and AirPlay sends the music to a speaker.
B-Side has no accounts, no ads, no tracking and no analytics. Its App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected.
